Getting Started

What is Handle?

Handle is a new type of social network focused on high-quality content and responsible user behavior. Our platform combines AI-powered and human moderation with financial incentives for maintaining community standards.

Account Types

Handle offers several account tiers to fit your needs:

  • Free Accounts: Automatically assigned numeric handle (e.g., 10005435)
  • Basic Accounts: Custom alphanumeric usernames (e.g., skinnydanish11)
  • Premium Accounts: Custom handles without number requirement (e.g., fluffymuffins)
  • Brand Accounts: Verified brand accounts with extended features

Creating Your Account

  1. Visit handle.app/signup
  2. Choose your preferred account tier
  3. Complete email verification
  4. Create a password
  5. If applicable, select your custom handle
  6. Complete payment (for paid tiers)
  7. Set up your profile

Logging In

To log in to your Handle account:

  1. Visit handle.app/login
  2. Enter your email address
  3. Enter your password
  4. Click "Log In"

Using Handle

Posting Content

Handle supports various content formats:

  • Text posts (character limits vary by account tier)
  • Images (PNG, JPG, WebP)
  • Videos (MP4, WebM, max 20 seconds for Basic accounts)
  • Code blocks with syntax highlighting
  • URLs (automatically processed through our platform shortener)

Profile Customization

Customize your profile based on your account tier:

  • Avatar (static or animated, depending on tier)
  • Background image
  • Bio information
  • Featured posts (Premium accounts)
  • Custom layouts (Premium accounts)

Following and Discovering Content

  • Follow accounts to see their posts in your feed
  • Explore trending topics and featured content
  • Discover new accounts through our recommendation system
  • Search for specific topics or accounts

What is Markdown?

Markdown is a lightweight markup language that allows you to format text easily. Handle supports markdown formatting in all posts and comments.

Add the language name after the first three backticks for syntax highlighting. Supported languages include:

Community Standards

Content Moderation

Handle uses a multi-layered moderation system:

  1. AI-based content moderation (first line of defense)
  2. Human moderator review
  3. Community standards enforcement

Violation Consequences

Breaking community standards results in:

  • Monetary fines based on violation severity
  • Suspension of posting and commenting privileges until fines are paid
  • For repeated violations, potential account restrictions or termination

Reporting Content

To report content that violates our standards:

  1. Click the "..." menu on the post
  2. Select "Report"
  3. Choose the reason for reporting
  4. Add any additional context
  5. Submit your report

Appealing Moderation Decisions

If you believe a moderation decision was incorrect:

  1. Visit your account settings
  2. Select "Moderation History"
  3. Find the decision you want to appeal
  4. Click "Appeal"
  5. Provide your reasoning
  6. Submit for review

Account Management

Subscription Management

Manage your subscription from your account settings:

  1. Go to Settings > Billing
  2. View your current plan and renewal date
  3. Upgrade or downgrade your subscription
  4. Update payment methods
  5. View payment history

Changing Your Handle

  • Free accounts cannot change their numeric handle
  • Basic and Premium accounts can request handle changes (fees may apply)
  • Handle changes are subject to availability and moderation review

Account Security

Protect your account with these security features:

  • Optional two-factor authentication
  • Login notification alerts

Deactivating or Deleting Your Account

To deactivate or delete your account:

  1. Go to Settings > Account
  2. Scroll to the bottom
  3. Select "Deactivate Account" or "Delete Account"
  4. Follow the confirmation steps
  5. For deletion, verify via email confirmation

Platform Features

Code Sharing

For developers and technical discussions:

  • Syntax highlighting for popular programming languages
  • Monospace formatting
  • Language-specific styling
  • Code blocks don't count toward character limits

URL Handling

When sharing links:

  • URLs are automatically detected and processed
  • Our platform shortener creates a safe, tracked link
  • Link previews show title and thumbnail when available
  • URLs don't count toward character limits

Fediverse Integration

While Handle federates with the broader Fediverse:

  • You can push content out to Fediverse followers
  • External commenting is limited to maintain our moderation standards
  • You can follow external Fediverse accounts
  • Direct messages are not supported across federations

Technical Support

Common Issues

Solutions for frequently encountered problems:

  • Can't log in: Reset your password or check your email for verification
  • Post not showing: May be pending moderation review
  • Media upload fails: Check file format and size limitations
  • Handle unavailable: The handle may be reserved or already taken
  • Payment declined: Verify your payment method information
